The Fenghuang originally consisted of a separate male Feng and a female Huang, as in yin and yang. Before the Qin Dynasty, the Feng and Huang image symbolised love between husband and wife. Since then, the Feng and the Huang merged into a single female entity, with the dragon-and-phoenix design becoming the new image of husband and wife.
These double phoenix envelopes attempt to revive the old Feng and Huang image as a pair of female lovers. If you observe the pair closely, you will see they are Camille and Diana imagined as the queen of birds.
